Choosing to Participate-Facing History and Ourselves

Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world.”

― Paulo Freire, Pedagogy of the Oppressed

Hilary--Really great combination of words and pictures here. I like the theme of hands--joining together, reaching out, connecting--to represent how we try to bring our students together. I like how you put the Statue of Liberty here last, reminding us of what our values are as a nation of many different kinds of people coming together. Jan

Hilary- I love the quote you included about fairness not looking the same to everyone. I feel like I am constantly explaining this to people who don't understand why some of my special needs students get accomodations. Everyone is given a different set of tools to start with, and it is our job as educators to find the best way to utilize those tools. -Genevieve
